Putin takes oath for fourth term

World May 7, 2018 10:54

moscow - Russian President Vladimir Putin took the oath on Monday for his fourth term. For about five thousand guests in the Moscow Kremlin, he promised 'to be faithful to the people.'

The 65-year-old has been dominating politics in the world's largest country for eighteen years. At the presidential election in March, according to the electoral council, he achieved a record result of almost 77 percent of the votes. Putin's new term of office runs until 2024, after which he has to resign in accordance with the constitution.

The inauguration was overshadowed last weekend by the violence with which the Russian police acted during demonstrations of the opposition. About 1600 supporters of opposition leader Alexei Navalni were arrested across the country. Most of them have been released, but according to the human rights organization OVD-info there are still dozens on Monday.
