Puigdemont may stay in Berlin

World April 10, 2018 00:03

berlin - The former Catalan Prime Minister Carles Puigdemont may remain in Berlin pending a decision on his possible extradition. The Schleswig-Holstein court ruled that Monday. As a condition it is stipulated that the separatist leader reports once a week to the police in the German capital instead of in Neumünster, as was previously the task.

Puigdemont was released on bail on Friday. The day after he told Berlin to prefer Neumünster during his forced stay in Germany. He can not leave the country until the legal proceedings have been completed. Puigdemont was arrested when he entered Germany from Denmark on his way to his refuge in Belgium. Spain had issued an international arrest warrant for this purpose.

The German court now has to decide whether Puigdemont can be transferred to Spain for embezzlement of public money. Expulsion for rebellion, of which Puigdemont is also accused in Spain, was rejected last week.
