bucharest - Romanian President Klaus Iohannis get to the Constitutional Court on a decree that issued the government. Ioannis contests the legality of the measure which creates the possibility some prisoners detained for corruption committed in public, to release.

Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu argued that prisons are overcrowded and that amnesty is desirable for a number of corrupt practices. He also said that the measures criminal law into line with recent decisions of the Supreme Court.

Suddenly issued a decree of the government of the social democrat Grindeanu Wednesday led to massive demonstrations in Bucharest. An estimated more than 250 000 Romanians argued against the amnesty, the largest number of protesters since the collapse of the communist dictatorship in 1989.

The Minister of Commerce, Florin Jianu, Thursday resigned following protests. The EU and a group of Western countries including the Netherlands, the USA and Canada have conveyed their concerns about the Romanian legislation.
