bujumbura - The people of Burundi have massively adopted a new constitution that allows the current president to remain in power until 2034. The election committee announced the results on Monday.

According to the committee, 73 percent of voters voted to extend the president's term from five to seven years. Also, President Pierre Nkurunziza is now allowed to be elected for two terms, starting in 2020.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission said at a press conference that 96 percent of the 4.7 million registered voters voted last Thursday.

According to human rights organizations, campaigns and voting took place in a climate of fear and intimidation. The government says that the vote was free and fair.

The 54-year-old Nkurunziza came to power in 2005 at the end of a long civil war in which 300,000 people died.
