washington - President Joe Biden has granted clemency or reduced sentences for nearly 1500 prisoners, emphasizing the importance of second chances.

President Biden stated that America is built on the promise of second chances. 'I am privileged to forgive those who have shown remorse and are on the path to recovery,' he said. Biden has previously granted clemency multiple times and is expected to do so again in the final weeks of his presidency. In 2022, he granted clemency to prisoners serving time for marijuana possession. This was later followed by sentence reductions for individuals incarcerated for marijuana sales and use. Earlier this year, former military personnel convicted due to their sexual orientation also received sentence reductions or pardons.

Earlier this month, he granted clemency to his son Hunter, who was convicted of firearm possession and pleaded guilty to tax evasion in a Los Angeles case. Initially reluctant, Biden's decision to grant clemency to his son garnered significant criticism.

Approximately 1.9 million people are currently incarcerated in the United States, with the majority held in prisons and detention centers.
