santorini island, greece - Greece plans to build a special port on Santorini Island for emergency use in response to seismic activity in the Aegean.

Greek Government's Initiative

Greece's Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias announced the construction of a special port on Santorini Island to prepare for earthquakes. The minister emphasized the need for coastal residents to move to higher ground in case of a major earthquake. The decision to build an additional port for earthquake scenarios was made in collaboration with the Greek Armed Forces following discussions with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Kikilias highlighted the presence of numerous underwater volcanic areas in the Aegean and the monitoring of recent magma movements by experts. The minister also stressed the monitoring of ground uplift and subsidence on Santorini Island.
