sydney, australia - A popular beach in the eastern Australian coastal city of Sydney has been closed until further notice after 'mysterious black' balls washed up.

A popular beach in the eastern Australian coastal city of Sydney, Coogee Beach, has been closed since Tuesday afternoon after 'mysterious black' balls washed up along its entire length. Rescuers evacuated the beach after finding the mysterious black debris in ball form, according to City of Randwick, the local council. It is currently unclear what the material is, but it could be 'tar balls' formed when oil comes into contact with water and waste, usually a result of an oil spill.

The local council mentioned that environmental officials have taken samples for testing, and measures have been put in place to safely remove the material. In the meantime, City of Randwick is urging people to avoid the beach. Other nearby beaches are being inspected, but for now, Coogee Beach seems to be the only one affected.
