rome - Pope Francis receives critical care at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Learn about the hospital room, security, and visitor regulations.

Pope Francis' Hospital Stay

Pope Francis remains in critical condition at Gemelli Hospital, receiving top-notch care. The hospital, renowned for its medical staff and proximity to the Vatican, houses a special papal suite on its tenth floor. The suite, though modest, includes a kitchenette, bathroom, living room, and a private chapel with a balcony for the Pope to address believers. Access to the suite is restricted to a select group of medical personnel.

Following the shooting of Pope John Paul II in 1981, Gemelli Hospital became the designated hospital for popes. The hospital, with 1,611 beds and over 5,000 employees, is the largest in Rome and boasts a stellar reputation. Believers have been flocking to the hospital to pray for Pope Francis' swift recovery.

The Pope's security is ensured by the police and Vatican gendarmerie during his hospitalization. The Swiss Guard, however, does not have jurisdiction outside the Vatican. Visitation to the Pope is limited to a few individuals due to his condition, akin to intensive care protocols.

Despite the desire of many to visit the Pope, including dignitaries like Premier Giorgia Meloni and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, access is restricted to a minimum to allow the Pope to rest. His private secretaries coordinate visits, including arrangements for his sister from Argentina to travel to Rome. The Pope's current health condition necessitates a minimal visitation policy.
