'Pope was aware of child abuse'

A letter from 2015, in the hands of the American news agency Associated Press, seriously embarrasses Pope Francis. He contradicts everything that the church father has recently asserted about abuse by Catholic clergy.

The pope had defended Chilean Bishop Barros during a trip to Latin America last month against allegations that he had put up pedophile scandals of clerics. The pope called it slander and said that there was no evidence against Bishop Barros. He also said that victims had never reported to him.

The opposite appears true. In 2015, the Pope received a detailed letter about child abuse via Cardinal Sean O'Malley, Pope's Adviser on Child Abuse. Victim Juan Carlos Cruz went into the letter extensively on abuse by the Chilean priest Fernando Karadima.

The Chilean bishop Juan Barros was aware of the abuse, but refused to do anything about it, according to the letter. Now it is of course possible that Cardinal Sean O'Malley did not keep his word and never delivered the letter. The American cardinal maintains that he did. If, however, he is lying, it becomes clear once again that the Pope receives incomplete and inadequate information, as Italian journalist Massimo Franco recently stated.

It is also possible that the pope had received the letter, but rather would like to stop the complicity of Bishop Juan Barros in the cover-up. In that case, the Pope would have lied, which is much worse.

The Pope announced last week that he was sending archbishop Charles Scicluna, the Vatican's main expert on sexual abuse, to Chile to conduct an investigation.
