rome, italy - The graftombe of the late Pope Francis, made from marbles of Liguria, will be a modest tomb in Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, reflecting his wishes for simplicity.

Pope Francis's Graftombe in Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

The graftombe of Pope Francis, who passed away at 88, will be a humble tomb with a marble inscription in Rome's basilica. Made with marbles from Liguria, his grandparents' region, the tomb will bear the simplicity he desired.

Design and Location

The tomb, featuring only his name 'Franciscus' and a reproduction of his chest cross, will be placed near the altar of Saint Francis in a niche between the Paulus V Chapel and the Sforza Chapel. Pope Francis specifically requested a simple burial without elaborate decorations in his will.

While most popes are interred in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Pope Francis chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, his favorite church in Rome, for his final resting place.
