strasbourg - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk advocates deregulation and criticizes Green Deal in European Parliament speech.

Focus on Security and Deregulation

In a fiery speech at the European Parliament, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for deregulation and criticized the Green Deal proposed by former EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans. Tusk emphasized the importance of maintaining competitiveness in the face of high energy prices in Europe.

Tusk, who will lead the EU presidency for the next six months, highlighted the need for increased security measures, particularly in defense spending. While championing NATO's defense budget, he also welcomed President Trump's call for higher defense contributions from NATO allies.

Regarding European defense, Tusk advocated for common financing and a European missile defense system but opposed the idea of a European army due to potential disagreements among member states. He stressed the need for Europe to prioritize its own security interests.

Criticizing overregulation, Tusk called for a more streamlined regulatory framework to enhance Europe's competitiveness. He specifically targeted the Green Deal, stating that while environmental protection is essential, economic competitiveness must also be preserved.

Tusk warned of the economic consequences of soaring energy prices and urged a critical review of all regulations, including the Green Deal, to address problematic aspects and foster necessary changes.

Expressing concerns about the impact of high energy costs on governments and democratic trust, Tusk emphasized the importance of effective border control and migration management without resorting to nationalism or xenophobia.
