washington - An American passenger plane crashes into a river near Washington after colliding with a military helicopter, sparking a massive rescue operation.

Rescue Operation Underway

An American Airlines plane coming from Kansas was about to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport when it collided with a Blackhawk helicopter on Wednesday night. The wreckage is partially submerged in the river, with divers searching for survivors amidst freezing water temperatures.

The plane, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was in two pieces underwater. The Blackhawk, with a crew of three, also crashed. The cause of the accident remains unclear.

The Reagan airport, located near the Pentagon, is a busy hub in close proximity to military bases. Military helicopters are common in the area, but the circumstances of the collision are still being investigated. President Trump has been briefed on the tragic incident, expressing his condolences.

Historically, the Reagan airport has seen fatal accidents, with the last major disaster occurring in 1982 due to icy conditions. The recent collision has once again brought tragedy to this prominent aviation location.
