santa cruz, california - A portion of a pier in Santa Cruz, California collapsed into the sea on Monday due to high waves and hurricane-like winds, resulting in two engineers and a project manager falling into the water.

Two of them were rescued by emergency responders, while the third managed to reach safety on their own, as reported by the authorities.

All three individuals were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley at a press conference.

The section of the pier that collapsed during the storm was under renovation after being damaged by severe storms last winter. Some remaining pier poles are still in the ocean, posing 'serious hazards,' said the mayor. Authorities advise everyone to stay out of the water and 'never turn their back to the ocean.'
