Parliament gives away Swedish Prime Minister Löfven

World September 25, 2018 09:32

stockholm - The Swedish parliament has voted out the social democratic Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. The 61-year old Löfven has been prime minister for almost four years.

His leftist 'red-green' party coalition has won 144 of the 349 seats in parliament at the start of this month and he did not receive enough support in Tuesday's vote.

He remains, however, outgoing Prime Minister as long as the political parties in their negotiations have not yet succeeded in forming a government coalition. Löfven said that he does see opportunities to stay on. According to him, a coalition can be formed 'across the dividing lines'. Presumably he is referring to parties that together form a conservative and liberal alliance.

The right-wing populist Sweden Democrats (SD) won a big win in the ballot box with 62 seats. The SD also voted against Löfven.
