panama city - Panama responds to statements made by incoming US President Donald Trump regarding the Panama Canal, stating that sovereignty over the canal is non-negotiable.

Panama asserted on Tuesday that the sovereignty of its interoceanic Panama Canal is non-negotiable, in response to remarks made by incoming US President Donald Trump. The 78-year-old Republican, set to take office on January 20, hinted at wanting to take control of the Panama Canal and not ruling out military or economic pressure to achieve this.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Martinez-Acha stated, "The sovereignty of our canal is non-negotiable and is part of our history of struggle." He also referenced President Jose Raul Mulino's stance, who had previously made it clear that the sovereignty of the country is not up for discussion.
