kiev - In the Ukrainian capital Kiev, thousands of people have taken to the streets on Sunday to demand the resignation of President Petro Poroshenko. According to Ukrainian media, the leader of the protests is the Georgian former president Mikhail Saakashvili. National demonstrations have been announced before 18 February.

The stateless Saakashvili, married to the Dutch Sandra Roelofs, has been sentenced to three years in prison in Georgia. During his reign in 2004 to 2013 he misused his power, the court ruled. Ukrainian authorities still have to decide whether it will be delivered.

In Ukraine, Saakashvili is accused of involvement in a criminal organization. The politician was arrested earlier, but is now walking around freely because a judge refused to put him under house arrest.
