ukraine, russia, europe, us, south korea - An old debt repayment deal between Ukraine and Russia turns sour as Russian military uses bombers sold by Ukraine against them.

In the 1970s, the Tupolev Tu-160 supersonic strategic bombers were developed in the Soviet Union and later used by Ukraine after gaining independence. However, in 1999, Ukraine sold eight Tu-160 bombers to Russia as repayment for gas debts. Recent investigations have revealed that Russia is now using at least six of these bombers, causing tensions between the two countries. Radio Liberty has identified pilots of these bombers, one of whom was involved in deadly attacks in Ukraine.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Russia has also been using Kh-55 cruise missiles acquired from Ukraine in 1999. Ukraine received approximately 285 million dollars for the eight Tu-160 bombers, 575 Kh-55 cruise missiles, and three Tu-95 bombers. This has left President Zelensky bitter due to Russian military possessing weapons sold by Ukraine while his own army faces shortages.

Zelensky has been seeking more military support from allies due to the recent involvement of North Korean troops supporting Russian forces. As Zelensky turns to countries like South Korea for assistance, the European Parliament and Dutch MEPs advocate for increased support for Ukraine in various forms. The future of military aid from both the US and Europe remains uncertain amidst the ongoing conflict.
