amsterdam - The Donbas region, including Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, faces economic challenges under Russian occupation.

Challenges in the Donbas Region

The Donbas, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk, faced issues even before Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The region has been marred by a shadow war since 2014, resulting in a significant decline in population. Currently, around 5 million people reside in Donbas and Crimea, a 56% drop from pre-2014 figures.

The occupied areas lack viable economic prospects due to mass emigration, leaving behind a population of low-skilled individuals and elderly with health problems. Russian attempts to govern the region have been met with resistance, leading to the deployment of Russian personnel for key roles.

Rebuilding the economy requires significant labor influx as well as infrastructural improvements. Cities like Mariupol and Bakhmut have suffered extensive damage, necessitating billions for reconstruction. Despite Russian investments, corruption and economic stagnation persist, with output levels far below pre-war figures.

Russia's economic woes, exacerbated by the costly war and sanctions, hinder efforts to revitalize the region. The banking sector faces potential crisis, while substantial oil and gas revenue losses and brain drain contribute to a grim economic outlook.

The Russian economy, burdened by financial strains and depleted resources, struggles to achieve sustainable growth. Escalating debt, rising interest rates, and obscured data paint a bleak picture, signaling a looming economic crisis.
