north korea, japan, south korea, united states - North Korea conducted its first missile test of the new year, raising tensions ahead of the change in US administration.

North Korea conducted its first missile test of the year, launching a ballistic missile towards Japanese waters. The missile reportedly fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. Both Japan and South Korea confirmed the missile test, with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff stating that it was a mid-range ballistic missile.

The test comes as the United States prepares for a change in administration, with incoming President-elect Joe Biden set to take office on January 20. The timing of the missile test, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in South Korea for diplomatic talks, is seen as a signal to the incoming Biden administration.
