19 Turkish Origin Candidates Elected to German Parliament

In the general election held in Germany, 19 Turkish origin candidates have been elected as members of the Federal Parliament for the 21st term. The provisional official results of the elections in Germany show that these candidates will serve in the Federal Parliament.

Political Distribution:

  • Social Democratic Party (SPD) - 7
  • Left Party (Die Linke) - 7
  • Christian Democratic Union (CDU) - 2
  • Greens (Grüne) - 2
  • Christian Social Union (CSU) - 1

Among the elected members are Hakan Demir, Metin Hakverdi, Macit Karaahmetoğlu, Mahmut Özdemir, Aydan Özoğuz, Derya Türk Nachbaur, and Serdar Yüksel from the SPD. From the Left Party, Gökay Akbulut, Ateş Gürpınar, Ferat Koçak, Cansın Köktürk, Cansu Özdemir, Cem Hamit İnce, and Mirze Edis have been elected. Serap Güler and Tijen Ataoğlu from CDU, Ayşe Asar and Filiz Polat from Greens, and Hülya Düber from CSU are also among the elected Turkish origin members.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party had two candidates of Turkish origin in its lists, including Bilge Leyla, who describes herself as a 'Christian, a mother, and a proud German', and Kerim Denis Erdem, who defines himself as 'tolerant' and believes that 'every opinion deserves to be heard'.
