chongjin, north korea - North Korea arrests chief engineer of Chongjin shipyard following a failed torpedo boat launch, causing damage and embarrassing leader Kim Jong-un.
Engineer Arrested After Failed Navy Ship Launch
North Korea has detained the chief engineer of the Chongjin shipyard for the unsuccessful launch of a new torpedo boat, as reported by state media. The mishap occurred during the ship's official presentation, where it tilted sideways, causing significant damage.
Key Figures Detained
In addition to the chief engineer, the head of the construction site where the ship's hull was built and an assistant director for administrative affairs have also been arrested in connection with the incident.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, present during the launch, expressed anger and referred to the incident as a 'crime' resulting from 'unbelievable recklessness, irresponsibility, and unscientific empiricism.'
Despite initial reports of serious damage, North Korean state media KCNA stated that an inspection revealed no bottom holes in the ship and described the damage as 'not severe.'
Repair Orders Issued
Kim Jong-un has ordered the repair of the damaged ship before an upcoming government party meeting in June. Satellite images show the warship still partially tilted, covered with blue sails.
