Nobel committee in discredit by rape case

stockholm - The Swedish Public Prosecution Service persecutes the man who is the center of the riot around the committee that awards the Nobel Prize for Literature each year. Photographer Jean-Claude Arnault, the husband of a member of the Swedish Academy, is suspected of having raped a woman in Stockholm in 2011. He would have twice gone to the victim.

Several women accused Arnault of sexual misconduct last year. He would also be responsible for leaking names of Nobel laureates he had received from his wife. That led to a crisis within the Academy. Several members resigned in protest against the approach to the scandal and the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature was canceled.

Prosecutor Christina Voigt said Tuesday that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute Arnault. He denies the accused. His lawyer contradicts that there is hard evidence. The lawyer emphasizes that there are no eyewitnesses and that the alleged abuse took place 'long ago'.

Prosecutors also investigated other allegations of abuse, but closed that investigation earlier this year. It lacked evidence. Also, some possible offenses were already barred.
