No breakthrough at EU and Turkey summit

varna - Top consultations between the EU and Turkey have not led to a breakthrough. EU President Donald Tusk acknowledged that no compromises had been achieved, but expressed the hope that the parties would still come closer together in the future.

Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker spoke with the Turkish president Recep Erdogan in the Bulgarian port city of Varna. In addition, many sensitive issues were discussed. The EU is concerned, among other things, with the Turkish invasion of the Afrin Syrian region, the Turkish rule of law and the detention of EU citizens in the country.

' I have expressed all our concerns. It was a long list, 'Tusk said. Erdogan said he hoped the EU and his country would have left the difficult period in their relationship. He said that Turkey is 'a democratic constitutional state' that respects human rights and fundamental rights.

Turkey has been waiting in the waiting room for years to become an EU member, but there is not a lot of progress in that process. In the run-up to the summit, the Turkish leader had called for the new accession process to be revived.
