new york - New York has decriminalized adultery as a result of repealing a 1907 law.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul officially made the change by signing the proposal on Friday. She stated that adultery should be handled 'clearly' by the parties involved, not by criminal law.
The law previously criminalized sexual relations when at least one of the parties was a living spouse. Regional lawmaker Charles Lavine, who proposed the bill, mentioned that only thirteen people have been charged since 1972, with only five resulting in convictions.
The last case was in 2010 and was reportedly dropped as part of a settlement. Some states in the United States still consider adultery illegal, such as Oklahoma, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
