New York Food Bank Receives Live Salmon Donation

new york, usa - A New York food bank receives 18,100 kg of live salmon, processed for distribution to partner organizations.
New York Food Bank Donation
The Food Bank of Central New York recently received a donation of 18,100 kilograms of live salmon from LocalCoho, a company from Auburn. The salmon, sourced from a bankrupt salmon farm, presented a unique logistical challenge because the fish were alive.
Processing and Distribution
Volunteers assisted in safely transferring 13,312 live fish from the tanks to processing facilities. The fish were then cleaned and frozen into fillets by a processing plant, with an estimated market value exceeding $700,000. This process is crucial as proper freezing preserves nutritional value and extends shelf life, ensuring safe food distribution.
The processed salmon will be distributed among 300 partner organizations across New York, reinforcing community food aid initiatives.
