New 'Tiananmen moment' in Venezuela: Woman is proud of tank

caracas - An unknown woman has become the symbol of the violent protests in Venezuela by defying an armored police vehicle. The images strongly reflect those of the Tank Man, who in 1989 alone opposed a column of tanks at the protests at Tiananmen Square.

The woman, known locally as 'La Dama', carried a hat in the colors of Venezuela and a flag of the country to hate shoulders when she fled to the police vehicle earlier this week.

A video shows how she stands in front of the armored vehicle and stops the driver. Even if something explodes in the neighborhood, she does not differ and places her hands on the bumper of the car.

On other images you can see what happens next. The woman is tipped by a loudspeaker and a man sticks his head out of the car and throws something to her. Then the vehicle goes back and the woman follows.

The moment was also recorded by AFP photographer Juan Barreto.

Lilian Tintori, the opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez's wife, praised the action and described him in a speech last Wednesday. 'I am so proud of Caracas. Look at the photo, the video, of the woman who stood for a tank, 'she said. 'What did the tank do? He went back, he had to go back. '

The images look very similar to that of the Chinese man with the plastic bags that became world famous. Also, that man remained unknown, but almost 30 years later, this one image still raises a reminder of the demise of the student uprising at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989.

Angry Venezuelans have protested since the supreme court of the country last month put parliament on a sidewalk. That step was quickly reversed, but the popular wrath was not tempered there.

Security forces sometimes resort to the massive protests across the country. But opposition leaders have already announced new actions. They demand, among other things, that deferred regional elections are held and that almost one hundred arrested opposition activists are released.
