New 'Super Speed Camera' in France Could Lead to Multiple Fines in One Go

france - France is set to install a large number of 'super speed cameras' that can detect multiple violations simultaneously, raising concerns among motorists.

According to French media reports, a significant number of the speed cameras will be equipped with artificial intelligence. These new cameras will not only check for speed or red light violations but also detect if a driver is not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone. Additionally, they can also monitor if drivers are maintaining a safe distance.

Motorists are worried about the increased likelihood of accumulating fines with the new speed cameras. If a driver commits multiple violations at one camera site, they could face fines amounting to hundreds of euros. These advanced cameras are expected to be deployed mainly in urban areas rather than just on highways.

Reports indicate that the 2025 budget includes an expansion of permanent speed controls to over 4100, with more than 500 super speed cameras being added.

The French mobility club 40 Millions d'automobilistes criticizes what they call the 'excessive use' of speed cameras. The club believes that using police officers for road checks would be more effective in improving road safety than relying on the 'new mass fine weapon', which they view as a revenue-generating measure for the government.
