barcelona, spain - Cybercriminals in Spain are using plastic bags containing fake invoices and purchase papers for bitcoins with harmful QR codes to infect mobile phones.

Plastic Bag Scam with QR Codes

A new form of cyber fraud has emerged in Spain, known as the 'plastic bag scam', where cybercriminals are placing fake invoices and purchase papers in plastic bags containing harmful QR codes. The innocent finder who scans the QR code hoping to claim bitcoins actually ends up infecting their mobile phone with malicious software.

The Catalonia Cybersecurity Agency warns residents and tourists not to scan QR codes from unknown sources, whether found on the street or sent to a home or email address. They recommend installing a QR code reader to detect harmful files and fraudulent links.

This type of fraud was discovered in the town of Montgat, where plastic bags with fake documents for cryptocurrency purchases and harmful QR codes were found. The agency emphasizes that cyber fraud is evolving to become more personalized and widespread, with an alarming increase in theft reported for 2024. Cyber scams are expected to be carried out on a larger scale using techniques like phishing and smishing, combining AI for more sophisticated attacks. Vigilance is crucial in preventing falling victim to such scams.
