baltic sea - The Finnish Coast Guard reports that satellite navigation in the Baltic Sea has been increasingly disrupted since April. Ships are getting lost at sea, prompting interventions to prevent them from approaching islands or shallow waters.

The Finnish authorities suspect that Russia is involved in the issues. It is believed that navigation signals might be intentionally disrupted to hinder Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian port areas.

The coast guard also observes tankers tampering with their signals to conceal visits to Russia. This has been reportedly noticed about ten times with vessels that have docked near St. Petersburg.

A coast guard commander told Reuters that there are apparent attempts to evade sanctions. Ships transporting oil, for instance, can pretend they have not been to Russia by using a technique called spoofing.
