new delhi - The mystery behind a sudden surge of paralysis cases in India seems to be solved as authorities take drastic measures in the affected region.

Link Between Mystery Paralysis and Guillain-Barré Syndrome in India

An unusual increase in paralysis cases in India has been connected to the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). GBS typically starts with common cold, flu, or diarrhea, followed by muscle weakness spreading to arms and legs.

About a third of patients fully recover, another third have mild residual symptoms, while the rest may face severe consequences affecting daily life, such as extreme fatigue or pain.

While GBS is more common in India, it took time for authorities in Pune to realize the extent of the outbreak. The outbreak in Pune may be linked to food infections in the region, possibly related to the campylobacter bacteria found in animal intestines.

The only treatment for GBS involves filtering blood for campylobacter and using human antibodies to stop the immune system from attacking nerve cells internally.

Drastic measures have been taken in Pune, with dedicated hospital wards for the 160 patients, extensive water and food testing, and public advice on hygiene practices.
