prayagraj, uttar pradesh, india - Several casualties reported at the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest pilgrimage, in northern India.

Tragedy at Kumbh Mela

Multiple deaths and injuries occurred during a stampede at the Kumbh Mela, the largest pilgrimage in the world, in northern India. The incident took place at the Sangam Nose in the city of Prayagraj, where the sacred rivers Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati converge.

Pilgrims had gathered at this point for a ritual bath, which is a significant part of the pilgrimage. The event attracts hundreds of millions of people, with an estimated 400 million Hindus expected to visit Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26 for six weeks of ritual baths, prayers, and processions.

Witnesses reported that individuals sleeping on the river banks were trampled by those coming out of the water, resulting in a tragic incident. Approximately fifteen casualties have been confirmed by a doctor speaking to the press. Emergency services, including about twenty ambulances, rushed to the scene to assist the injured and transport them on stretchers.
