Mnangagwa puts army figures on ministerial posts

harare - The new president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has assigned senior military personnel important posts in his cabinet and appointed a veteran minister to finance. Other well-known figures from the era of his predecessor Robert Mugabe also return.

Patrick Chinamasa receives Finance under his management, Air Marshal Perrance Shiri becomes Minister of Land and Major General Sibusiso Moyo Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The appointment of so many famous figures from the former regime may be a damper to the opposition. He had hoped for a broad government and a break with the past after the forced resignation of 93-year-old Mugabe.

Mnangagwa, who was appointed president a week ago, is under pressure to put the administration in order and, in particular, to halt the downturn of the economy. He announced Tuesday that he will merge several departments to improve efficiency.
