baltimore - The owner of the container ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, United States, has agreed to pay over 100 million dollars (over 92 million euros) in compensation to the American federal government.

The owner, Grace Ocean Private Limited, and the operator, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, reached an agreement with the US authorities through the Department of Justice, avoiding prolonged legal battles and costs.

The Singapore-flagged ship blocked one of America's busiest ports after experiencing technical problems on March 26 and colliding with a bridge support column, causing the bridge to collapse and resulting in the death of six workers.

The Department of Justice found that the container ship had technical issues before the collision and the crew made mistakes. These issues could have been prevented if the owner and operator had complied with safety regulations and appointed a well-trained crew.

The owner may also face claims from the families of the six victims and employees who were affected by the blockage of the Baltimore port access after the collision.
