Surveillance System Closed on Helicopter Involved in Collision
A military helicopter that collided with a plane near Washington on January 9 was found to have its surveillance system, known as ADS-B, closed. Texas Senator Ted Cruz announced on January 29 that the automatic surveillance system, which shares flight information, was turned off. ADS-B system automatically broadcasts aircraft's flight information such as location, speed, and altitude. Cruz stated that there was no reason for the surveillance system to be turned off for security purposes, emphasizing that the helicopter was on a training mission.
