Milestone: ETA offers apologies

madrid - The Basque terrorist movement ETA Friday apologized to its victims and their next of kin for half the century that they fought violently for an independent state in the north of Spain.

The apologies come for the expected lifting of the movement, which gave up its battle a year ago by handing in weapons and explosives. This ended the last armed revolt in Western Europe.

'We are aware that during the long period of armed struggle we caused a lot of pain and a lot of damage for which there is no solution. We show respect to the dead, the wounded and the victims of the actions of the ETA. We are really sorry, 'said the group in the Basque newspaper Gara.

In 1959, the movement Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (Basque Country and Freedom) began its struggle as a peaceful movement. It was initially directed against the destruction of Basque culture under Franco. But in the sixties the battle became grimmer- and ETA went on to the armed struggle. The first dead fell in 1968 when the head of the Basque secret police was killed.

The goal of the ETA changed into a radical separation of the Basque Country from the rest of Spain. After 1975, when Franco died, most of the fatalities fell: 829 in total. In 2011, ETA unilaterally announced a cease-fire. Since then there were no more attacks.
