Migrant flow via the river Greece is growing

athens - More and more refugees are entering Greece via the border river Evros. 'Since March more than 1000 people have crossed the river', warns the Red Cross. The aid organization states that last week it involved more than a hundred people a day.

The crossing of the river can, according to the Red Cross, be a life-threatening undertaking. 'Many people who drive the crossing do not have much experience with swimming,' explains a spokeswoman. She can not yet say whether victims have also fallen during the crossing.

The Red Cross expects that in the longer term more people will try to cross the river, because the water level will drop in the summer. Refugees who enter Greece like this are waiting for another problem. The closest center where migrants can register is 'totally overloaded'.

People who need medical assistance after the crossing also have to travel tens of kilometers. 'From this area it is 35 kilometers to the nearest clinic, the nearest hospital is 150 kilometers from this spot', according to the Red Cross.
