Merkel speaks Putin about Syria and Ukraine

sotsji - Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin speak to each other in private in the Russian resort of Sochi. It is the first time since a year that the German Chancellor is in Russia. The two leaders talk about the ongoing civil war in Syria, in which Russia plays an important role as an ally of the regime.

The 'nuclear deal' with Iran, which was recently denounced by US President Trump, and the conflict in eastern Ukraine are also discussed.

Putin spoke to Syrian President Assad in Sochi the day before, where he has his summer residence. Germany insists on a political trial in Syria and hopes that this will enable at least some of the millions of Syrian refugees to return.

Merkel and Putin also talk about the progress of the Nord Stream 2 project, the construction of a new gas pipeline in the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
