Surgeons Remove Spinal Tumor via Eye Socket

In a groundbreaking medical feat, doctors in the United States removed a rare spinal tumor from a 19-year-old patient through her eye socket, avoiding high risks associated with traditional methods.

Discovery of the Tumor

19-year-old Karla Flores from Maryland began experiencing vision problems in 2023, which led to the discovery of a chordoma, a rare malignant bone tumor pressing on her left eye.

Complex Surgical Journey

Under the care of neurosurgeon Mohamed Labib at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Flores underwent multiple surgeries to remove the tumor. The final operation, lasting 19 hours, involved a groundbreaking approach through the eye socket.

Novel Surgical Technique

Labib's team opted for a unique route to access the tumor, avoiding conventional methods due to high risks. The procedure, previously tested only on cadavers, marked the first instance of removing a spinal tumor through the eye socket.

During the meticulous surgery, delicate tissues around the eye were carefully maneuvered to access the tumor without damaging critical structures. A piece of hip bone was utilized for reconstructing the eye socket post-tumor removal.

Promising Recovery

Following the successful surgery, Flores underwent proton therapy to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. Despite post-operative discomfort, her latest medical reports indicate an excellent prognosis with no signs of cancer recurrence.

Labib expressed satisfaction with Karla's progress, noting her positive recovery trajectory.
