united states - Gordon Cordeiro, wrongfully convicted of murder, experiences a new world dominated by smartphones after being released from prison.

Unexpected Freedom

Gordon Cordeiro, 51, was released after 30 years following the overturning of his conviction based on DNA evidence. He expressed gratitude at his mother's grave for watching over him during his incarceration.

Cordeiro was convicted at 20 for a fatal drug deal robbery in 1994, despite maintaining his innocence. New DNA technology proved his innocence, leading to his release last Friday. He celebrated by treating himself to a homemade steak and reconnecting with family.

Adjusting to his newfound freedom, Cordeiro noted the drastic changes in the world, including the prevalence of smartphones. While he only had a beeper when entering prison, he now struggles with the constant notifications on his smartphone.

The Hawaii Innocence Project played a crucial role in proving Cordeiro's innocence, highlighting false testimonies and misconduct by prosecutors. The court's decision to overturn his conviction brought relief and joy to his family.
