caracas - Nicolás Maduro participates in the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela. The current president of the country confirmed on Wednesday that he is standing for re-election and wants to go for a new term of office.
The elections in Venezuela are planned for no later than 30 April. Although Maduro is unpopular because of the major food shortages and the world's highest inflation, it benefits from a well-oiled political machine and a compliant legislative body.
The opposition can not make a fist. The most popular opposition leaders are almost all from politics, imprisoned, in exile or excluded from their office. Months of protests last year could not drive Maduro away and resulted in at least 125 deaths.
