brussels, belgium - French President Macron highlights the need for the EU to invest in continent-made defense equipment to achieve strategic autonomy.

French President Macron's Call for Strategic Autonomy

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of the EU gaining strategic autonomy in the defense sector by investing in continent-made equipment. Macron pointed out that with challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's attacks on Ukraine, and new statements from the US President, achieving European strategic autonomy has become more crucial.

Macron stated that recent remarks suggesting possible tariff increases on the EU by the US have pushed Europe towards being 'stronger and more united' in defense and economy. He stressed the need for strategic autonomy in defense for the Union, stating that if its commercial interests are attacked, Europe will need to ensure its self-respect.

Macron called for investments in the defense industry with a 'European reference' and highlighted that investing in continent-made defense equipment will make the EU more autonomous.

Leaders of the 27 EU member states gathered in Brussels at the Egmont Palace under the leadership of European Council President Antonio Costa to discuss the future of European defense.
