Macedonians take to the streets against name change

World June 3, 2018 05:54

skopje - Several thousand Macedonians went up the street on Saturday to protest against a possible change of name of the country. Supporters of mainly opposition party VMRO-DPMNE came together for the government building in the capital Skopje, where they waved the national flag. They demand early elections.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev wants to pull the economy out of business and is committed to joining the EU and NATO. Greece, in particular, has opposed it so far. Neighboring countries have been in trouble since Macedonia separated from Yugoslavia in 1991, because Greece has its own region of Macedonia.

Zaev is negotiating with Greece on the name issue. He said that the Macedonians are still allowed to speak in a referendum this year about the possible name change of their country. VMRO-DPMNE, which led the country for ten years until 2016, is firmly opposed to name change.
