freetown - Julius Maada Bio is the new president of Sierra Leone. He was sworn in a few hours after the election committee announced the results. The candidate of the opposition Peoples Party SLPP defeated the incumbent president Ernest Bai Koroma in an exciting ballot box. According to the official result, Maada Bio received 51.8 percent of the votes, against 48.2 percent for Bai Koroma.

The new president is given the heavy task of helping the poor country to recover economically. The poverty in the country was partly caused by the devastating outbreak of the Ebola disease that plagued the country in 2014.

Maada Bio is an old acquaintance. He had been in power in the West African country in 1996, after he had forced Valentine Strasser, with whom he and other colleagues had committed a military coup in 1992, to resign. He quickly realized the promise of free elections.

After he left the army, Maada went to study Bio in the US. After returning to Sierra Leone he became a member of the SLPP, for which he was the presidential candidate for the second time. This time with success.
