Lula excluded from Brazil elections

World September 1, 2018 06:16

brasilia - The former president of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva may not participate in the presidential elections in October. The electoral court in Brazil has decided to do so because of Lula's condemnation of corruption. The lawyers of Lula have already said they will appeal.

The left-wing former president is in prison since April this year. He got twelve years in prison because of a corruption case. Nevertheless, the Workers' Party decided to put 72-year-old Lula forward as the presidential candidate. Beforehand, the expectation was that the judge would ban the candidacy.

Lula was president from 2003 to 2010. During those years he conducted a social policy that removed many Brazilians from poverty. He is therefore still popular and was in the lead in the polls. His running mate Fernando Haddad, former mayor of Sao Paulo, is now probably the presidential candidate of the Workers' Party.
