washington - Authorities in the state of Louisiana confirm the first known H5N1-related death in the country.

A patient who was hospitalized with avian influenza in an American hospital has passed away. According to the Department of Health in the state, the patient was over 65 years old and had other underlying health issues. 'The patient remains the only human case of H5N1 in Louisiana,' the statement reads.

Further details about the death will not be disclosed for privacy reasons, the authorities added.

The department emphasizes that most people face little risk from avian influenza. Those who regularly come into contact with birds, poultry, or cattle are at a higher risk.
