lisbon, portugal - In an effort to prioritize city residents, Lisbon plans to introduce special tourist queues for iconic yellow tram.

Lisbon's Initiative to Prioritize Residents

In an attempt to make public transportation more accessible for local residents, Lisbon is set to implement special tourist queues for popular attractions such as the famous yellow tram 28 and cable cars. The priority system will first be trialed on line 28 and the cable car connecting the sought-after neighborhoods of Graça and Mouraria.

City officials aim to address the overcrowding issues faced by tourists and locals alike, especially on the iconic yellow tram route that traverses the historic city center, showcasing landmarks such as Baixa, Graça, Mouraria, Alfama, and Estrela.

Recognized as both a tourist attraction and a vital mode of transportation for city dwellers, the yellow tram often experiences long queues due to its popularity among visitors seeking an authentic and budget-friendly tour of Lisbon. To ensure a smoother commute for residents and minimize the impact of tourism, the municipal council is introducing the priority system, granting subscription holders precedence over day-ticket holders.

The proposal, which has received widespread support from the city council, aims to strike a balance between catering to the tourism industry and preserving the quality of life for Lisbon's residents. Concerns over the strain on public transport caused by the surge in tourist numbers have prompted discussions on increasing single ticket prices for the yellow tram route, currently priced at 3.10 euros when purchased directly from the driver.

As part of a broader strategy to manage the influx of tourists and alleviate resident grievances over rising living costs, Lisbon is exploring various measures, including potential fare adjustments and infrastructure enhancements within its public transport network.
