brussels - The Belgian lawsuit against terror suspect Salah Abdeslam will start on 5 February. His lawyer Sven Mary had requested a postponement and that request was honored in a short session by the court in Brussels on Monday.

Abdeslam is in a French cell awaiting the trial of his role in the 13 November 2015 attacks in Paris that claimed 130 lives. The Belgian lawsuit is about a shooting in the Brussels municipality of Vorst in March 2016.

A Belgian-French police team was then fired at from a house in which Abdeslam was also located. The 28-year-old Frenchman and a co-defendant managed to flee, but were arrested shortly thereafter. During the shooting three agents were injured and an Algerian terror suspect was shot dead.

Mary did not really want Abdeslam as a client anymore because the cooperation did not go smoothly, but the lawyer decided to defend him last week anyway. He will now thoroughly analyze the criminal file.
