paris - The left wing in France immediately frowned when they heard the proposal to baptize Front National in Rassemblement National. The new name looks suspiciously like a French party that was raving against the German Nazis during the Second World War. The symbol of the old Rassemblement National Populaire, founded in 1941 and disappeared in 1944, was a variant of a swastika.
'Do the responsible people within the FN not know French history? Or do they play with it? 'Alexis Corbière asked on Twitter. The deputy of the left-wing populist party, La France Insoumise, recalled that Marcel Déat, the founder of the RNP, is eternally known as a collaborator.
'A conscious reference? Who knows, 'Corbière sneered. He added that Roland Gaucher, who was the base of the Front National with Jean-Marie Le Pen in 1972, was already at the RNP during the war years.
