rotterdam - Leeuwin Lalana, a lioness at Diergaarde Blijdorp, has tragically passed away after being diagnosed with feline leukemia.

Leeuwin Lalana, a lioness at Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam, has sadly passed away after succumbing to feline leukemia. The animal fell ill on Friday and deteriorated rapidly in the last few days. She stopped eating, experienced vomiting, had limited movement, and urinary incontinence. Despite medication for nausea and antibiotics, her condition did not improve. In consultation with the veterinarian, the decision was made to euthanize the animal to end her suffering.

Diergaarde Blijdorp had hoped that Lalana, along with another lion, Wishu, would contribute to the conservation of the species. Due to the contagious nature of the FELV virus, tests are being conducted to determine if Wishu has also been infected.

Lalana's body has been taken to Utrecht University for further examination to understand better the circumstances surrounding her illness.
