lebanon - General Joseph Avn has been elected as the new president of Lebanon following a two-year presidential election crisis in the country.

After two years of ongoing presidential election crisis in Lebanon, General Joseph Avn has been elected as the new president in the parliamentary vote. According to the country's laws, a candidate needs to receive 86 votes in the first round to be elected as the president.

The crisis began after former President Michel Avn's term ended on October 31, 2022, and the country has been struggling to elect a new president since then. The last parliamentary session was held on June 14, 2023. Former President Avn was elected in the 46th session of the parliament back in 2016.

As per the Lebanese Constitution, the President is a Maronite Christian, the Prime Minister is a Sunni Muslim, and the Speaker of the Parliament is a Shia Muslim.
